AIRTEC is the prime contractor on the U.S. Department of Commerce National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Global Monitoring Laboratory (GML) task order, leading a team performing flights for atmospheric measurements over Africa. GML operates a global network of sites for collecting measurements of atmospheric trace gases, including greenhouse gases and ozone-depleting substances, to track their distributions and trends. Aircraft flights over Africa taking measurements of atmospheric trace gases will significantly enhance GML’s global coverage and observing capabilities and are needed to improve our understanding of global emissions for air quality and climate science studies in support of the NOAA mission.
AIRTEC is proud to support this mission with our partners providing cutting-edge research in climate, weather, and atmospheric science that is critical to understanding global environmental patterns and effects. The team leads efforts to modify the aircraft to supply uncontaminated air samples for measurement, to obtain reliable meteorological and Global Positioning System (GPS) data, and to power and carry the measurement equipment, as well as obtain the permits necessary for the aircraft modifications and to perform research flights. Our subcontractor provides a 406 Caravan aircraft and a deployed team of Pilots, Sensor Operators, and Mechanics to perform the work. A NOAA Picarro system, a sophisticated technology used for precise gas and isotope measurements which allows for highly accurate and sensitive detection of various gases, including greenhouse gases (GHGs) is used. AIRTEC’s collaboration with NOAA and our teammates continues to support innovation in advancing research.
The team has overcome many challenges including lack of power, resources, sensor equipment, and facility availability in unstable regions, many with closed borders but the team performs both passive and dedicated flights to support the mission. This project is another example of the dedication and commitment it takes to successfully operate globally with rapid deployment and sustainment in contested environments. The AIRTEC team is dedicated to supporting international security, safety, and defense missions as well as scientific and environmental missions that provide valuable data to help protect natural resources, which will be crucial for future generations and all species.
